First, read Jed Gillan's book Obligate Carnivore. I would be careful feeding cats table scraps. Cats shouldn't eat garlic or onion at all, and I would worry that those table scraps would probably have some of that as an ingredient. Cats need the...

Her stools are not loose - the vet inquired about this as well... in fact I have never noticed this as a problem; once she had blood in her stool but apparently this is common in cats and my holistic vet didnt see the need to address it. I spoke ...

I haven't had that experience, but my cat Maggie, seems to have a sensitive stomach, and throws up occasionally too. When we first received Maggie, we finished off the bag of animal-based kibble that we were given along with her, before starting h...

I acutally just posted about my experiences with other vets. Some vet techs were amazing, bringing out the leather gloves, wrapping her in a towel, and that horrible plastic cone that goes other her head (I coudlnt even watch.) This particular ins...

Eric, I used to go to this holistic vet in Chelsea. The Heart of Chelsea Animal Hospital. Dr Elliot works from this office as well as another. While she mentioned that my cat should eat a meat-based diet, her approach was more holistic and I didn...

I have had my female cat Dinah on a vegan diet, Ami dry and Evolution wet, since Aug of 2007. She was fine until about April 2008. She threw up 1-2x month. Then starting in June she began to throw up more often. I ran out of the Ami - it ships fro...

I'm a little disheartened. I tried making some of the vegecat recipies including the chikpea and tofu and the oats and tofu ones. I also tried one flavor of evolution can. My cats sort of nibbled at each of them a little bit or not at all and ate ...

I'm curious if others of you have dealt with the pervasive anti-vegan cat bias that I have faced when trying to take your companion in for health care. If so, how have you responded? What do you th...

Meat trial: The plot thickens...

Our non-vegan food trial continues - here's an overdue update! We've decided to extend the trial to 60 days - we hit the 30-day mark and it was pretty clear that 30 days wasn't really long enough to see what effect the diet change was having. So regretfully, we're continuing to feed them animal-based foods for now. Fortunately we found a couple of brands of hormone-free, organic food that seem to have some integrity… Continue

Action alert: Post a comment about vegan cat nutrition

An activist I know sent me this link: Is it ok to feed my cat table scraps? The author writes, "cats are carnivores, they need meat to survive and be healthy. A cat's digestive system is different than that of humans and other omnivores. Forcing a cat to eat a diet not based on meat proteins will inevitably lead to health problems and eventually even death."

Maybe some folks her… Continue

Non-vegan cat food for 30 days, week 2: Natural schmatural

We're two weeks into our 30-day trial now, and we've seen some changes:

  • Sid's allergy seems to have actually improved. It's been on-again-off-again for years though, so we're not sure yet if it's the food or if it's just a coincidence that she's not itchy right now.

  • Zora's little scratch by her mouth has healed up. Again, this could be a coincidence - we haven't yet checked her gums to see if her g

Non-vegan cat food for 30 days, week 1: Raw meat is gross

Sid, Zora and Snow have been eating meat food for a week now, as part of our 30 day trial, and they sure love the flavor - but no health changes so far. If anything Snow's gingivitis and Sid's allergy are acting up more than ever. But we'll keep on going to see what happens!

Here's what we've learned from our first week:

  1. We fed the girls organic raw chicken for the first week but are switching to (organic)

A non-vegan cat food 30-day trial

We adopted our three cats off the streets of Brooklyn. Sisters Sid and Zora have been vegan since they joined us in November 2005, and Snow has been vegan since she arrived in February 2008. So, that's two cats who have been vegan for nearly 3 1/2 years, and one who's been vegan for just over a year. So far, the only issue we've run into with their diet has been Sid's getting crystal formations which required a change in diet… Continue
